I used to like Jim Carrey. His movies are, generally speaking, good (or at least they're better than a lot of the crap that comes out these days).

BUT.

My respect/liking for him just took a serious dip, and all because of THIS.

Not only is he now writing pieces for the *grits teeth* Huffington Post, but apparently, he's best buddies with Jenny McCarthy(1), and has joined up with the anti-vaccinationists and the IDIOTS who, despite the piles upon piles of evidence to the contrary, PERSIST in believing that vaccines (specifically the MMR) cause autism in children.

My sceptical side is highly, highly annoyed by this. And frustrated, and just a bit depressed.

(1. Jenny McCarthy... well. She's kind of the ringleader for the anti-vacs lot. She spreads disinformation and false "cures" for autism, and on my darker days I sometimes wonder if she's related to the OTHER famous McCarthy.)

I just found the following posted on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets:

And, really... well, to start with I'm not even sure it counts as a "fandom" secret, but you could say the same of a lot of posts there.

That's not the main issue, anyway. The issue I have is that the OP of that secret, who I'm assuming isn't, say, Neil Gaiman's exwife, is making a poorly informed judgement on the relationship of two people he/she has most likely never met.

It's how poorly informed they seem to be that really gets me. It is easy - very, very easy - to go online, look at Neil's and/or AFP's blogs, and with extremely minimal effort you can find out that actually, he's still good friends with his exwife and that she gets on well with his kids.

As for the "loss of respect"... well. Maybe the OP's definition of respect is different to mine, because I've never lost respect for anyone based on their choice of romantic partner. (Saying that AFP "should have known better" is just dumb, judgemental and poorly informed, thus I will not comment further.)

tl;dr: some anonymous person on the interwebs was excessively judgemental. Two people that I, personally, respect and admire are in a happy relationship together, and it's none of anyone's business but theirs.

I am very NOT HAPPY today, for reasons that mostly have to do with work stuff that I can't really talk about right now, with an added dash of, oh, you know, every major politician in the UK being a complete retard, and a little frustration regarding Afghanistan.

tl;dr, this icon = my mood right now. Now excuse me while I go make myself feel better with comfort food and Heroes.

This week I saw three fandom-y things (well, two definite and one that was just my interpretation...), at three different times.

#1 was a guy in a t-shirt that said "I aim to misbehave"

#2 was a second guy in a t-shirt with the helix-y thing from Heroes on/

#3 was a guy wearing the same tweed jacket that Matt Smith's been wearing for his Eleventh Doctor costume.

Each of those made me go *squee* a bit.

On the flip side, today I was walking past a pedestrian crossing - on a side street, not a road where traffic moves particularly fast - when a couple and their two kids were crossing, and the asshole in the nearest car basically didn't stop at the crossing to let them pass. And fyi, there was nothing stopping him from seeing them, and it's a zebra crossing that gets used frequently, so he ought to known better.

The mother of the kids gave him a good yelling-at, though. (No-one was hurt - but they could easily have been.) Gods, there are some self-centred idiots in this world.
