Everything feels so futile right now.

I'm on the internet basically every day, mostly Facebook, and when I am on facebook most of my time is spent on AANR, the atheist/agnostic group.

I mean, okay, sometimes cool things happen - like that new exoEarth planet they found. But more often than not, most of what I hear about on the web is just more tragedies, more bigoted intolerant crap from fundamentalists who really shouldn't be let anywhere near government. I don't even live in America, I've never been there, and still I get sucked in to discussing what goes on there. It's really starting to get to me.

Mostly, I can sum this up with two examples.
1) The Westboro Baptist Church. As far as I'm concerned, the WBC are sadistic, cruel and seriously messed up. And as close to evil as it is possible to be.
2)The horrible events at Virginia Tech recently. I know that what happened was terrible, and should never have happened, but what really really pisses me off is the fact that almost immediately afterwards, various religious people were swarming over VT, telling the world that Cho Seung-Hui was "possessed by the Devil" (just one example - yeah, someone did say that).

In reality, Cho was mentally ill, and needed serious help, which he did not get. One would think an event like this would lead to reassessment of the gun laws in America, but noooooo, of course not.

What really infuriates me about the aftermath of the VT tragedy, though, comes from a blog by a man in California called Dinesh D'Souza. This man works for Stanford University, so you would expect him to be intelligent, yes?

Think again. D'Souza's response to the VT Tragedy was to point out that, while various religious speakers had commented, Richard Dawkins had not been asked to comment.

Now, what planet does this man live on? Does he seriously think Dawkins is the only well-known atheist in the world? Does he think Dawkins invented atheism, or is some kind of atheist "representative"?

Richard Dawkins is a zoologist. A scientist. He is not a philosopher, a theologian, or a religious leader. Why, in this case should anyone expect him to be asked for a comment? It simply makes no sense, and proves that D'Souza knows precisely nothing about atheism

*takes a deep breath*

Okay, I'm going to stop now. I've ranted enough for one night. But I will say this: If I could leave and go live on Gliese581, I would. That shows how much I despair of this planet.

Namaste,

Nicole
