Jacob Theories
Feb. 18th, 2010 11:02 pmRight. I've been thinking about Lost a lot recently. I've also been theorising.
The Jacob Theory, #1
Known fact #1: Jacob visited certain people, at various points during their lives - Jack, Hurley, Sayid, Locke, Jin and Sun, Kate and James.
Hypothesis #1: Jacob didn't just visit the people we saw him visit. In some way, every single person who survived the Oceanic 815 crash was chosen/selected/visited by Jacob at some point, though they likely didn't realise.
Thus, when the plane crashed the people who survived were ALL people who, at some point, had been chosen.
Hypothesis #2: Jacob was (is?) playing a very, very long game here. He chose future 'candidates' years in advance, and in doing so he somehow changed their destinies, bringing them all to the Island.
This would suggest that, to some extent, Jacob knew what was going to happen, and possibly knew that he was going to die, and made sure that there were plenty of candidates for his replacement around.
(Corollary borrowed from
bradeatspeeps: The numbers that, as of 6x04, were assigned to different survivors represent their suitability as candidates. So Locke is the most suitable at #4, but is unavailable as he's dead. Hurley at #8 is next, but is at the Temple and thus also unavailable. James is next at #15, and that's who Smokey!Locke went after.)
Outright Guess #1: Things seem to have happened in a way that Jacob did not anticipate. Therefore, the "script" that dictates what happens can be altered - but, as Jacob did not anticipate any changes, it would seem that the people he brought to the Island would not be able to cause any changes.
Known Fact #2: There are/were people on the Island that were not chosen/brought by Jacob.
These are:
The DHARMA folks (I believe the Purge was Jacob's method of removing them)
Ben (initally DHARMA, probably should have died in the Purge - perhaps Richard was not supposed to give him that gas mask? If Ben was not supposed to survive and take over leadership of the Others, this might explain why Jacob wouldn't talk to him.)
Juliet (was only brought to the Island by Ben - and it is unclear that she would have been involved had Ben not been leader.)
The DHARMA folks aren't much use, seeing as they've all been dead for a while now, but Juliet and, especially, Ben are still very relevant. They're the wildcards in the situation, if you like.
Hypothesis #3: The nuclear warhead could only have been detonated by someone who had not been chosen by Jacob. Jack (one of the chosen) initially dropped the bomb down the shaft - but it didn't detonate until Juliet set it off.
The Jacob Theory, #2
Jacob and Smokey!Locke are two sides of the same coin. Each is the equal and opposite of the other, and as such they cannot exist independently of one another. The death of one would upset the delicate balance that the Island appears to exist in, and that would very likely lead to Very Bad Things.
I suspect that this is what the Random Blond Kid from 6x04 was trying to get across. Smokey!Locke couldn't kill Jacob, or manipulate others into killing him, because to do so would destroy that balance. This makes the scale with the white and black rocks look a lot more significant.
The Jacob Theory, #3
Jacob's physical body might be dead (and, btw, human bodies do not burn that easily...), but he isn't.
Personally, I suspect that this is what Sayid being "claimed" means. Sayid = Jacob 2.0, in other words. (he was #16 on the list...)
Questions
#1. Desmond. At first I thought that he might be a wildcard too, but then I thought more about the Swan, about him not pressing the button and the plane crashing. At the moment it looks like he's not a wildcard, but he doesn't appear to be one of the people Jacob chose, either.
#2. What the hell have Charles Widmore and Eloise Hawking got to do with all this?
(No, really. Really, I need to know.)
#3. How do Ilana and the Ajira 316 people fit in?
#4. What the hell is up with Claire, and why the hell is she apparently turning into Rousseau?
