trillianastra: (fifth doc - brainy specs)

Uhhhhh... ok, the episode finished literally sixteen minutes ago (from time of writing), so everything still a little raw. But what the hell, I'll try and post something coherent anyway.

Random thing to start out... the base was called "Bowie Base One". I loved that. And, OK, I had Life on Mars playing in my head for a moment there... anyway, now that we're done dorking out.

- nice reference back to Classic!Who with the Ice Warriors. Referring back to The Stolen Earth (Adelaide's backstory) was a bit... ODD, but not too bad, considering.

- the base crew seemed like... perfectly nice people, tbh. They did feel like a group of people who'd been on an isolated base together for two years, which is good, but really I tried not to get too attached, because from the trailers I knew most of them would die.

- ADELAIDE. Well, in some of the publicity for this ep, Adelaide was described as "the most intelligent companion yet". This is strange to me, because I'm really not sure what they're basing that judgement on. She isn't (er, wasn't) stupid, certainly - but if we're just going by New!Who Companions, then she didn't seem more intelligent than, say, Martha - and if we open this up to Classic companions we have Ian, Barbara, Vicki, Liz, Sarah Jane, Nyssa, Romana, Adric, Ace, and Grace from the TV movie, and that's just off the top of my head.

That aside, though, I'm not sure how I feel about Adelaide Brooke. She had courage, certainly, and it seemed like she cared about her crew. I suppose I am sorry that she's dead, but knowing what happens, with her granddaughter leading humanity into space, it feels... all right, really.

(If that made no sense whatsoever, I'm sorry. Like I said, it's still raw.)

- THE DOCTOR

I cried for the Doctor in this episode, because he knew what was going to happen to the Base and he couldn't stop it.

And then he changed, just CRACKED and became something that truly was terrifying. You know how the Daleks had that name for him, the "Oncoming Storm"? Well, this wasn't the Oncoming Storm, this was the Storm that's right over your head threatening to strike you with lightening any moment. This was a reminder that the Doctor, though he often IS a force for good, taking down dictators and evil empires and suchlike, has a dark side and can also be very, very scary. (I saw a lot of the Valeyard in him in this episode. Some of the Master, too, but the Master generally tends more towards the "let's do bad stuff because it's fun and I'm bored" end of the scale.)

Also, because sometimes my brain comes up with the most inappropriate stuff... the whole TIME LORD VICTORIOUS RAAAARRRR moment made me think of Highlander in a big way, what with the whole THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE thing and all.

(Final note... WTF was up with that Random!Unexpected!Ood????)

- THE TRAILER FOR CHRISTMAS '09

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT THE FRAAAAAAAAAAAAK?

(Honestly, mostly I just switch between wanting to slap RTD for being so fricking melodramatic and going SQUEE a lot because we get Simm!Master back.)

IN CONCLUSION:

Well, thanks, guys, I think you maybe just broke my heart a bit.

On the other hand... RTD, that was actually good and did not suck at all. You're now slightly less on notice than you were before.

(Hey, you didn't think I was going to forgive him for Children of Earth THAT easily, did you? There are still 2x specials to go, you know....)
