X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Apr. 29th, 2009 09:31 pmI just saw this after work today... reactions behind the cut.
Okay.... basically, the hard-core purist XMen fans might be a little disappointed. I'm not an expert on Marvel canon, mostly because there's just so much of it, but I'm pretty sure they played with it a bit in this movie. And by a bit, I mean a lot.
HOWEVER...
it's actually a really good, really fun movie. It grabs your interest right from the beginning (and the opening credit sequence? that's some great filming right there), and it does more than enough to sustain that interest right through to the end.
Also, it's waaaaaaaaaaaay better than XMen: The Last Stand. Though admittedly that isn't hard to acheive.
And now time for some specificity...
Wolverine (Obviously, who else would I start with?). As usual, Hugh Jackman was great. It felt like they really made an effort to give him a good backstory in Movie!canon.
Also, he's gained about 10000000000000 Badass Points, and spends a lot of time shirtless. As far as I'm concerned, that's a good thing.
Sabretooth.
Now, I feel a little conflicted over this guy. I know he's technically the villain of the piece, and I know he'll end up dead eventually...
but goddamnit he's sexy.
I blame the swishy black coat myself. And the Badassery.
Gambit.
I'm not going to lie. Gambit was the reason I was excited to see this movie. I am a big Gambit fan, and actually... I really like Movie!Gambit. He's not exactly Comic!Gambit, but then that applies to every other character in the whole damn movie.
If any of the Marvel Studios people fancy making an XMen Origins: Gambit movie, incidentally, I'll be first in the queue to see it.
Stryker.
I found Younger!Stryker to be a more interesting character than the older version we saw in X2. The references to his son and wife were nice - and showed that they haven't forgotten their own canon completely. A rather... well-rounded, well-characterised bad guy, basically.
Kayla.
Now... here's where canon basically gets thrown out the window. They made it pretty clear that Kayla's sister is Younger!Emma Frost... though I don't remember anything about Emma having an older sister with a different last name before.
I should point out that I quite liked Kayla in her own right, and she did fulfil the obligatory romantic subplot rather well. She was basically doomed from the start, though.
Deadpool/Wade Wilson.
At the beginning... well, I very much liked Wade.
At the end... I don't like what they did to him. Also, I suspect that what they did to him is going to make many, many Deadpool fans very, very pissed off. I barely know the character and I think it was a waste, so if we extrapolate... well, Marvel better watch their backs.
John Wraith, Chris Bradley, and Fred Dukes.
John Wraith was cool, if under-used.
Fred Dukes was somewhat grotesquely awesome. (And ohhh, Kevin-Durand-based cognitive dissonance here, damn you, LOST.)
Chris Bradley... great power. Character was sweet in a sad sort of way. Got sacrificed on the altar of Sabretooth to establish the Big Threat.
Emma Frost and Scott Summers.
Young!Emma was cool. Not the fierce, mega-powerful White Queen of Comic!Canon, but I personally am hoping for more Emma in future movies, so she can become that.
Young!Scott was... exactly the way I thought he would be.
Also... there was a shot of Baby!Ororo in the trailer. There was no Baby!Ororo in the movie. I feel cheated.
And Finally....
Ships.
Well, I think I ship Scott/Emma now, and I feel the urge to write fic... otherwise, I'm also starting to see why Remy/Logan is so popular. But that might be down to the respective attractiveness of Hugh Jackman and Taylor Kitsch. Again, fic is begging to be written there, too.
Also: in the past, I've been pretty much allergic to incestuous ships, with the sole exception of Wanda/Pietro (and that's practically canon anyway). This opinion is changing.
In other words....
I think I ship Wolverine/Sabretooth...
I'm totally going to the special hell, aren't I?
One last thing:
I heard that a Magneto movie will only be made if this movie does well.
Because of this, I really hope this movie does well, so that a Magneto movie can happen. Mind you, I only want a Magneto movie if it's going to have Wanda and Pietro in. If it doesn't... (and it should, because they're his kids for frak's sake) I shall be only mildly interested.
