Sam and Dean looked at each other, then Dean looked upwards and muttered, “Castiel, get your ass down here, we’ve got a situation.”

When he lowered his gaze, Castiel was already standing there. “What happened?”

Sam coughed. “You should… look for yourself…” he said, gesturing at the bed.

Castiel looked over at the bed, and went stiff. “Belial.”

“Castiel. You’re looking well.”

There was a long silence, which Dean interrupted. “Cas, who the hell is this guy? He said he’d only talk to you.”

She is… was one of my sisters. Before she fell.”

Belial grinned at Dean. “You’re not the first to make that mistake, darling.”

“She’s a demon? Then… why aren’t we killing her right now?”

Castiel whipped around. “She’s here to talk to me.” To Belial he added, “I think we should hold this conversation elsewhere.” He reached out a hand to her, and before either of the brothers could say anything, they were gone.

Belial found herself sitting on a grassy meadow, in the shade of a tree. She stretched out and sighed. “This is a nice spot,” she said to no-one in particular. “So… those were the Winchesters that you’re so fond of, were they?”

Castiel, still standing, looked down at her. “What do you want, Belial?”

She looked back at him, matching his gaze. “Why do you think I’m here, brother?”

“Because of him.”

“Got it in one,” she said with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “He’s out here, in Assiah, somewhere. I have to find him.”

“You know who Sam is.” It wasn’t a question, but Belial answered like it was.

“Of course I do, everyone in Gehenna does. I thought he’d have given in by now.”

“You may know who he is, Belial, but you don’t know him. He won’t say yes to Lucifer.”

Belial sprang to her feet. “Don’t say his name,” she said with a glare.

“He doesn’t love you.”

“Castiel…” she said, an unspoken warning in her voice.

“I know you don’t want to admit it, but it is the truth. Why do you search for him when he will only reject you?”

She looked down at her feet, then back up at him. “Don’t pity me.”

“I…”

“I can feel it, Castiel, I can feel you pitying me. Stop it. I don’t want your pity. I don’t even need your help, seeing as your precious human hasn’t accepted him yet. I’ll find him by myself.”

Castiel wanted to say something, but couldn’t think of the right words. He cursed the limitations of this human form. Communicating was so much less complicated when you were a multidimensional waveform. As it turned out, he didn’t need to say anything. Belial giggled softly to herself.

“It’s all right, brother. I know that you’re only acting like this because you care. I appreciate it really. It was… nice to see you. I haven’t been to Assiah for a long time. It’s changed.”

Castiel said quietly. “It was… pleasant to see you again, Belial.”

“Thank you for saying that,” she said just before she vanished.

Castiel returned, alone, to the motel where he had left the Winchesters.

“Where the hell have you been?” Dean said.

“Dealing with some family matters.”

“Cas…” Sam asked, “what did she want?”

For a moment Castiel considered telling them, but then to tell them would mean telling them everything, and he didn’t think Belial would want that.

“She wanted to find someone. I couldn’t help her.”

He could tell that the brothers had more questions, questions that he had no desire to answer, so before they could say anything else he left.
