The first person she went to was the only parent-figure she had left, her guardian. “Marcus… can I ask you something?” she said quietly while he was making dinner.
“Sure, honey, what is it?”
“If you like someone, and you’re not sure if they like you back, how are you meant to tell?”
“Well, if they’re being nice to you, that’s a good sign. What’s this about?”
Mindy smiled. “Nothing. I just wondered.”
The next person she tried was Katie, Dave’s girlfriend, who was always nice to her at school, or when they were hanging out in the afternoons, like they were now at the comic book store.
“Katie…” she said as she stirred her milkshake thoughtfully.
“Yeah?”
“How do you know if a boy likes you?”
Katie blinked. “Mindy, have you got a crush on someone? Who is it?”
She chewed her lip nervously. “There’s this boy in my karate class. You probably don’t know him.” She changed the subject quickly. “So, can you help? Any tips would be great.”
Katie laughed. “Well, what’s this boy interested in? Common interests are really important if you want a lasting relationship. And I suppose you could invite him round for tea, if your guardian’s okay with it.”
Mindy considered that. It was more useful that Marcus’ input, at least. “Cool. Thanks for that.”
“No problem.”
The third person Mindy went to was Dave. Most weeks she would go over in the evening and they would watch a movie or read comics together. Tonight they were watching the new Hellboy movie that Dave had on DVD.
They had paused the movie so they could get snacks and refill their drinks, and while they were in the kitchen Mindy said, “I have a problem.”
Dave immediately looked concerned. “Is it serious? Marcus knows, right?” He was always worried that the cops would find out about some or all of what she’d done as Hit Girl. It was really annoying.
“It’s not that kind of trouble, relax.”
“So, what kind of trouble is it?”
“There’s this boy, in my karate class. He’s really cool, but I’ve never really talked to him properly and I don’t know if he likes me back. I asked Marcus, but he didn’t say much that was useful, and Katie said to just spend time with him. I tried looking at magazines but they’re all about finding the way to his heart or whatever. I already know that… the fastest way to a man’s heart is between his third and fourth vertebrae in a smooth upward motion. It’s just that knowing that doesn’t exactly help me right now.”
“Oh, that kind of problem. Er… sorry, but there’s no magic solution here. Or at least not one that anyone ever gave me.”
“Yeah, didn’t Katie think you were gay at first?” Mindy said with a grin.
“It was a misunderstanding… and anyway, that proves my point. You need to be yourself with this kid. Don’t try and make yourself something that you’re not, it won’t work.”
“You’d know…”
“Hey!” He threw a handful of popcorn at her. “I’m trying to impart wisdom here. A little respect would be appreciated…”
