Let's Talk About.... Deadwood

I was introduced to Deadwood recently. My initial reaction was "ooooh, interesting", however it IS an HBO show, and prior experience has taught me that HBO shows appeal to me a lot more often than shows by any other network.
(True Blood, Generation Kill, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under... I may be missing something out here...)
Since then I've acquired S1 and S2 on DVD, and the watch-age has commenced.
I was thinking recently about why I like this show as much as I do. What I came up with is this:
25% Seth Bullock, in general.
25% Calamity Jane, Charlie Utter, Doc Cochran, Wild Bill Hickok, Trixie.
50% Al Swearengen, in general.
It's the Swearengen part of that equation that slightly worries me, because... well. I... don't really have the words to describe it adequately, unless "wanting to frak him" counts.
There's one person I reeeeally don't like, mostly because he's disgusting. That'd be E.B.
Pairings... we-ell, that's a little complicated. Al/Trixie is obvious (to me), but Trixie/Sol is *cute*, so, IDK. Also Alma/Seth, which is practically canon at the point I've got up to. Charlie and Jane and the Doc I don't ship with anyone. They're awesome enough as it is.
PS. Tom McRae's album "The Alphabet of Hurricanes" makes me think of this show. A lot.
