Title: Petty Theft and Misunderstandings
Rating: G
Genre: Humour
Prompt: Written for the
consci_fan_mo prompt "Two, Martha, petty theft"
Characters: Second Doctor, Martha, Tenth Doctor, Peri Brown, mention of multiple Doctors and Companions (plus one future Doctor).
Martha frowned as she heard a noise behind her – it sounded like the TARDIS engines, but it couldn’t be – she could see the TARDIS right there in front of her. She looked around for the Doctor, but he was still inside, mediating between the two opposing groups of Kinda that they’d run across when they arrived. As the Kinda communicated entirely by telepathy, it had quickly become boring and she’d slipped out of the tent.
She was wondering what the noise was, and whether or not she should get the Doctor, when suddenly a hand reached out and grabbed her arm, dragging her through the bushes and away from the TARDIS.
“Oi, let me go!” Before she could pull free, they arrived in a small clearing, and she saw that the person who’d dragged her along had been a small, dark-haired man, with a friendly face and what she thought was called a pudding-bowl haircut that was growing out a bit, wearing a rather battered-looking suit. The little man – still holding her arm – went over to the other side of the clearing, where she saw… the TARDIS. He opened the door, and pulled her inside.
“I don’t know who you are, but you’re going to regret this… stealing the Doctor’s TARDIS, kidnapping me…he’s really not going to be happy with you….” Inside, her eyes widened as she saw the interior. This might look like the Doctor’s TARDIS from the outside, but the inside was completely different.
Her kidnapper smiled. “Stealing the Doctor’s TARDIS? My dear, I am the Doctor. Perhaps not the one you’re used to, however.”
“Uh… yeah, I suppose…” She stopped looking around, and focused on him. “That still leaves the kidnapping, though. And… how can you be the Doctor?”
“Ah, that. Regeneration. The Doctor you know is probably one of my future regenerations… and don’t worry about any of this, I’m reasonably certain it’ll all work out. I just need to borrow you for something, that’s all.”
“Ri-ight. Reasonably sure…”
Her kidnapper wasn’t listening, though, as he was busy pressing buttons and things on the TARDIS (his TARDIS, she reminded herself) console. Only a few minutes later, they had landed wherever-it-was, and this other Doctor was opening the door.
“Come along, then.” He looked out, then back at her. “Almost everyone’s outside already. And what is your name, anyway?”
“Uh, Martha. Martha Jones.”
“Well, Miss Jones, come outside.”
Feeling a little trepidation, she tentatively stepped out, to see a number of people standing around. There seemed to be two groups. One was made up of several men, all with more or less unusual dress sense, and most of them frowning about something. Somehow, she had a feeling that they were all past or future versions of the Doctor, like the one that had kidnapped her from the Kinda jungle.
The other group was more varied, and seemed less agitated. There was a dark-haired girl in an old-fashioned outfit, a young man in a kilt, a blonde woman in a long pink coat who seemed to find the situation with the Doctors highly embarrassing, a tall man with messy hair and a few days’ growth of stubble, who had a guitar on a strap slung over one shoulder, and a young woman who looked about Martha’s age with dark hair cut in a bob.
Martha went to the woman with the bob, hoping she would know what was going on. “Uh, hi. I’m Martha. Do you know what’s going on?”
“Nice to meet you, I’m Peri. And this is Susan, Jamie, Fitz and Romana. None of us are really sure what’s going on, but we were all with the Doctor before we got here, and none of us came here with the same Doctor that we were travelling with. I got here with… him” Peri pointed out a Doctor wearing a velvet frock coat.
Martha nodded slowly. “Right….”
At that moment, she heard the sound of TARDIS engines again, and they all turned to see a TARDIS materialise and Martha’s Doctor run out, followed by…. Jack. Who was keeping a tight grip on a lanky, ginger-haired man she didn’t recognise. The fourth and fifth people out of her Doctor’s TARDIS were a man in a leather jacket and a pretty girl with curly brown hair.
Martha’s Doctor addressed the others. “All right, what’s going on?”
This may not have been a good question to ask, as it prompted each of the other six Doctors present to start talking at once, mostly on the theme of “He kidnapped my companion!”
Martha smiled despite herself when her Doctor rolled his eyes, and said loudly. “Oh, shut up, all of you.” The Doctors fell into disgruntled silence, and she watched her Doctor motion to Jack to bring the lanky man forward. “This is who started it, ok? Well, and him,” he indicated the Doctor in the leather jacket. “Apparently there was a misunderstanding, though how that led to the really very petty theft of each other’s friends I don’t think I want to know… anyway, you can all stop fighting now, collect whoever you’re supposed to be travelling with and get back to whatever you were doing.” He looked at them pointedly. “Well? What are you waiting for?”
He watched for a moment as they headed over to their various companions, all studiously avoiding having to look at each other, and then went over to Martha, smiling at her.
“You okay?”
She nodded. “Yeah. I met this girl, Peri. She seems nice.”
“Ah, Peri. That was a long time ago.”
“How are the Kinda?”
“Oh, they’re fine, just fine. Now, I need to drop Jack off back in Cardiff, you don’t mind do you?”
“Nah, that’s great.” She followed her Doctor and Jack into the TARDIS, glad to be back in familiar territory again.
