“Hey, Bryce,” Anna said, “how come your, you know, superhero name or codename or whatever is 'the Nemesis'. You're on the same side as us.”

“Oh... Chuck chose it. We... weren't talking for a while. I guess he felt bitter.”

“Huh,” she said thoughtfully.

“Why'd you want to know? Still looking for your codename?”

“Still looking....”

bzzzzt bzzzzt

“...uh, what's that?” Anna said.

“I'll find out.” Bryce hit the talk button on the intercom and said, “Hello?”

“Meeting in the boardroom, five minutes, Bryce.”

“Sure, Sarah. Shall I bring the new girl?”

“Yeah, she needs to see this too.”

Bryce and Anna left the training room and took the elevator up to the boardroom on the top floor of Agency Tower. The elevator opened directly into the room, so Bryce stepped out and took a seat. Anna followed, looking around excitedly, recognising the Intersect in one seat, where he was typing something on a laptop, and (she caught her breath) a few chairs away was the Angel of Death himself. He looked over at her. “You the new girl?”

“Uh.. yeah,” she nodded quickly.

“Any good?”

“I guess.”

He gave her an even look. “I hope you can do better than guessing,” and turned back to the dossier on the table in front of him.

Anna remembered to breathe, and realised that now everyone else was looking at her. Including the blonde woman at the head of the table. Her eyes widened when she realised that this must be the Agent, the founder of the Agency. “Uh... sorry...” she muttered as she scrambled to the nearest chair and sat down.

The Agent looked at her and smiled. “Good to have you with us, Miss Wu. Now, if everyone could look at the dossiers in front of them....” she looked at the Intersect, and added, “Chuck, that means you too.”

Chuck just sighed, closed his laptop, and picked up the thin folder.

The Agent continued: “We have someone calling himself 'Thunder Zap' active in the San Francisco area, where he's robbed several banks and has, as of an hour ago, taken a hostage. We don't have an ID yet but there are a couple of CCTV pictures in the files. Chuck, I need you to go over everything we have, see if you flash on anything... this guy must have come from somewhere. Bryce, you're going to San Francisco, liaise with the cops there and follow up on any leads they have.” The Agent paused to pass him a sheet of paper. “Here's the contact information for the lead investigator on the case. And.... Casey, you're going after this guy, track him down, recover the hostage and take Thunder Zap into custody,” she paused, “...alive, if you can manage.”

The Angel of Death just nodded. The Agent started to put her papers in order, and the others started getting ready to leave. Anna coughed. “Um... ma'am?”

“Yes?” The Agent looked up.

“What about me?”

“Miss Wu, you're not ready for field duty yet. You can stay in the Tower and keep training.”

“Oh,” Anna said, disappointed.

“You'll get plenty of other cases, I wouldn't worry about it. Let's go, people.”
