Hmmm.
OK, this being the kind of show that it is, I knew there was going to be an episode like this eventually. This is basically an origin story.
And it's a really good one, too.
Now, of course it was going to involve the thus-far-enigmatic Katherine Walters. Who turns out to be, in no particular order, a genuinely nice, kind, good person, the original owner of Carmine, and played by Amy Acker. (WOO at that last one...)
There are two other Big Things here as well...
the first is that we get to see the Old Boss. Still no name or any real information on him, but hey, at least we know he exists now... yeah, that's not really convincing me either.
the second regards Our Fearless Hero, who apparently went by Junior when he was still working for the O.B., and the name Christopher Chance.
See, there've been a few bodyguards by that name. One died in 1905, one in 1927, one in 1954... presumably there were a few more before the old guy who shows up in this episode. The thing is that "Christopher Chance" isn't really a name in the sense that Mr and Mrs Chance ever had a little boy and named him Christopher. It's a pseudonym, a nom de guerre. An identity that one takes on. A symbol, even, or maybe an idea.
(this makes perfect sense to me, because I'm already familiar with V for Vendetta, which makes... considerable use of the idea, let's say. BTW, if you're interested, go with the comic rather than the movie, it's massively better.)
It's a symbol of... safety, I suppose. Of there being someone out there who can protect you. Of justice, and freedom, and I'm going to stop now before I get to "the American way". You get the idea.
So by the end of the Origin Story, Katherine's dead and the last-but-one Chance is dead, and Our Fearless Hero takes on the name Christopher Chance and all that it entails, and Winston quits the police and they go into business together.
Some little things:
1. I have blocked all memory of Winston's first name, because the name he said was his first name is SO not cool enough for Winston.
As far as I'm concerned, his first name is Harry, and yeah, I may have stolen that from Sons of Anarchy but frak, I just don't care.
2. Awwww, Carmine was an adorable puppy!
3. OK, I... have a slight need to hug Guerrero right now, except he probably wouldn't like that. Um... don't ask...
