Caprica
OK. Caprica is up to its fourth episode now, so I guess it's time I said something about it.
It's... well, OK, I wouldn't be watching it if I hadn't been such a big fan of BSG. But then it wouldn't exist without BSG, so I guess that's all right. The thing is, when the PTB started talking about a prequel series, I was interested. Then we found out more about Caprica, and I wasn't really sure what to expect. It's an odd show, really. Obviously there are the science fiction elements, the creation of the Cylons and all... but then there's so much else!
Caprica isn't JUST a sci-fi show, it's also got elements of a family drama, a school drama and a cop show. Not to mention the religious, political, racial and sexual issues that come up. So... yeah. It's complicated. And, to be honest, I love it.
As you'll know if you've been watching, the show centres on two families, the Graystones and the Adamas (only the Adamas are going by Adams when the show starts), and it all kicks off pretty explosively - when a metro train is blown up, and the bombing is attributed to a monotheistic terrorist organisation called Soldiers of the One.
The Graystones are very wealthy - there's Daniel, an inventor, his wife Amanda (a doctor - a plastic surgeon going by 1x04), and their teenage daughter Zoey. The Adama/s family is at pretty much the other end of the spectrum - where the Graystones have a huge, well-appointed house by a lake, the Adamas live in a highrise apartment in the city. The Adama/s family consists of Joseph (yes, that Joseph Adama), his wife Shannon, and their kids Tamara and William. There's also Joseph's brother Sam. And his husband (Larry).
Characters:
Daniel Graystone: There's a good reason I've put this guy first. It's mostly the fact that I'm kind of... obsessing over him. He fascinates me. And, you know, I'm... really attracted to him. REALLY.
(honestly, when did Eric Stoltz get like this? The last thing I saw him in was Little Women, a VERY long time ago, and I was more interested in Christian Bale back then...)
Anyway. Daniel. I like him. A lot. He's one of my favourite characters already.
Amanda Graystone: Unfortunately, not such a big fan of Amanda.
This mostly has to do with my belief that she is more than a little batshit crazy. Also, her mood swings. They give me whiplash. And she can be kind of a bitch.
Zoey Graystone: Well, actual-Zoey, I can't say much about, seeing as I haven't had much opportunity to get to know her.
Zoey-Avatar, on the other hand... well, I'm still figuring her out. This may take a while.
(The Great) Joseph Adama: Is awesome.
(someone please give Esai Morales an Emmy or whatever, stat, please)
William Adama: Every time I see this kid, I think of EJO and go *squee* at the thought of the badass that the kid's going be grow up into.
Though, I wish (the Great) Joseph wouldn't call him Willie. HIS NAME IS BILL, DAMMIT. GRR.
Sam Adama: Is my other favourite character. This is only PARTLY because he's totally hot, I swear. It's also because he's badass. And awesome.
Other People:
Lacy - Zoey's friend. Was meant to be on the train the day of the explosion, but chickened out. Has (as of 1x04) a surprising gift for mechanics.
Sister Clarice - scares me a bit, has a 'group marriage', and is played by Atia off of Rome.
Jordan Durham - is anFBI Global Defence agent, currently investigating the bombing. He (and Amanda, and quite a lot of the population of Caprica) think Zoey was a) part of the STO and b) involved in planning the bombing.
Random Awesome People Who've Guest-Starred:
Foremost of these is PETER WINGFIELD as a GDD boss-type person.
We also have a couple of BSG-alumni - Kat as a PR lady and Duck as a random Tauron gang member.
So. Basically, I love this show. More, please!
