“Daddy will come, and take us home…”
River said that to Simon, when all the villagers were so angry. He didn’t understand, though. Didn’t know who she meant. Not that it mattered much, because she was right. He did come to get them back. Serenity hovered overhead, and Zoe and Jayne were there too, with Daddy.
The villagers cut the ropes holding her against the pole, and Simon took her arm, helping her down to stand on the ground. Then they left the village and the scared people who lived there, and Wash set the ship down on the ground so they could go inside. When everyone was inside and they were in the air again, Simon led her to the infirmary. She shuddered as they entered the small room. She sat on the bed in the middle of the room, while he fussed over her, making sure she wasn’t hurt. She knew she wasn’t, but Simon never listened when she tried to tell him. It was easier to let him get on with it. He worried less when she let him do that.
She hadn’t counted on the influence of external factors, though. Jayne burst into the infirmary, muttering something about the bu lang bu you ship and the kuang zhe de crew. He was followed by Kaylee, who looked worried, and was trying to apologise for something, and Zoe, who wasn’t saying much but had an expression of faint amusement.
When she turned back to Simon, he was (grudgingly, she suspected) examining a red welt on Jayne’s forearm. It turned out that Kaylee had been cooking, when Jayne had come into the kitchen and pushed past her to reach a cupboard, just as she’d been pouring hot water into a pan, and some of the water had scalded Jayne. While Simon was occupied, River slipped out quietly.
She climbed the stairs outside the infirmary, and soon found herself on the walkway overlooking the cargo hold. She sat down, letting her bare feet dangle over the edge.
River wasn’t sure how long she’d been sitting there thinking, but when she looked up, the Captain was there, and she was almost certain he had not been, before. He was crouching down to her now. “Now what’re you doin’ here, little one?”
“Thinking.”
“Well, you’d best do your thinkin’ somewhere else. I’m sure your brother wouldn’t want ya to fall an’ hurt yourself, would he?”
“No. He wouldn’t.”
“Exactly. C’mon, we’ll get you somewhere a bit safer.” With that, he helps her up. “Nian qing de, you’re shiverin’.”
Now he mentions it, River does feel cold, and the small hairs on her arms are standing up. “It’s cold”, she says, and he sighs.
“Yeah, that’d be why you’re shiverin’.” He slips off his coat and puts it around her shoulders. “Now, let’s find you somewhere warmer for your thinkin’.”
