“Please, Jack, we need you!”
He forces himself to look away from the man facing him and turn to where Tosh is standing, pleading with him to come with her.
He closes his eyes for a moment, not knowing what to do. Stay here in 1941, or go back to the future and Torchwood and business as usual. No matter what he chooses, he has to let someone down, and he hates that.
Tosh calls out, her voice tinged with urgency, asking him to hurry. He feels a light, tentative touch on his arm, and Captain Harkness’ voice asking if he is all right.
When he opens his eyes, they are brimming with tears. Realisation dawns on Tosh’s face as she realises what’s happening. He wraps his arms around her, whispers in her ear, and tells her that he’s staying behind. He tells her to go, quickly, before she gets stuck as well. Speechless, she stumbles as she turns toward the opening in the rift. The last thing she sees before it envelopes her is Jack standing there in 1941. Then she’s back in the present, and the dance hall is an abandoned ruin, and Gwen is running towards her and asking her where Jack is. She can’t answer, and just shakes her head again and again.
~
That night in 1941, Jack turns back to Captain Harkness, and realises that everyone in the hall is staring at him.
“Captain Harper?”
Jack blinks, then remembers the alias he’s using. He swallows, and says, “I need some air,” before heading for the doors.
For a moment he imagines that he’ll walk outside and he’ll be back in the future with his team. The illusion vanishes as he steps outside into a cool Cardiff night in the middle of the blackout.
~
”What do you mean, he stayed?” Gwen said frantically.
“He’s still there. In 1941… he said… he said he had to. There wasn’t time for him to explain…” Tosh told her.
Ianto hadn’t said anything yet, he was just standing at the edge of the room, listening to Tosh’s story, and wondering what Jack was doing.
~
Jack leant against the wall and rubbed a hand over his face. He was surprised to hear a voice nearby.
“Did it help?”
He looked up to see Captain Harkness looking concerned.
“Yes,” he said quietly. “Thank you.”
He half expected the captain to go back inside. Instead, he moved to stand next to Jack. They stood there in silence for a moment before the other captain said, “I… what happened in there. I’ve never done that before. I’m… it’s confusing, I’ve never felt like this before. I don’t know what this means.”
Jack thinks for a moment. “It’s not that rare.”
“It is for me! I’m not… I mean, you hear things, people out in San Francisco… I never thought…”
“Stop.”
Harkness looks at him, confused, and Jack adds, “How many girls have you liked? I bet it’s not many.”
“I…” he blusters, then says, “no, there haven’t been many. Nancy was the first since I left high school.”
“That’s what I thought. I wouldn’t worry, if I were you. Just don’t talk about it too much.”
“You know that from experience.”
“Unfortunately.” Jack grins weakly. “Captain, is there somewhere I could get lodgings around here?”
“There are rooms available in the place I’m staying…”
“Great. Can we go there? If you don’t mind leaving your men, of course.”
“They’ll be all right.”
They walk in awkward silence together down the street to the lodgings. The area seems familiar to Jack, though he remembers it as it will be, sixty years from now. It doesn’t take long for them to get there and for Jack to get a room to sleep in. He pockets the key and leaves his coat on the bed. Slowly, he removes his wrist-strap and tucks it into his coat pocket.
Then he crosses the corridor to Captain Harkness’ room and knocks on the door.
“Captain Harper?”
“Can I come in?”
Puzzled, the captain smiles and steps aside, letting Jack in. “Of course.” Shutting the door he says, “How can I help?”
Jack closes the space between them, and murmurs “You already have”, and kisses him.
~
As soon as Tosh felt calmer, she had started tracking news items and army reports from 1941, looking for any trace of Jack. Ianto helped by searching the Torchwood archives, reasoning that Jack might contact the Torchwood of 1941 for help.
~
The next morning, Captain Jack Harkness wakes to find that his identification papers are missing. In their place is a note telling him that everything will be fine, as long as you don’t leave your room. The note is signed James Harper.
He frowns, then his eyes widen as he remembers the night before. The note ends up being unnecessary, as he spends much of the day thinking about who he is, and the events of last night, and what he’s going to do now.
Captain Harper does not return until late that night. His expression is serious, but he grins when he walks in nonetheless. He’s brought a bottle of wine and food as well. He apologises for stealing his identification papers, but explains that there was something he desperately needed to do. The explanation was not terribly satisfying, but Jack realised that he didn’t want to talk more about it and let the matter drop.
